Characteristics
The Black Bear physically has thick claws that allow them to climb trees and escape predators.
They have behavioral adaptations too, like being very timid. They will often be seen running away from house cats. American Black Bears will hibernate in the winter so that they don’t die from lack of food and the cold.
The bears have also adapted reproductive wise. The female bear’s aren’t fertilized until Autumn, that way the cubs are born in January or February allowing the babies to big enough to survive the next winter.
The male’s home ranges overlap with those of several females. When the females have their offspring the males will keep other males away from the females allowing the babies to have a better chance at life.
Common characteristics that the American Black Bear has with its relatives are brown, black or grey hair and that they hibernate. Most of the bears that the American Black Bear is related to are all omnivores and have a very good sense of smell.
